summit January 8th, 2009

The worst of times could indeed be the best of times. That’s what happened to the Rogationist family during the terrible days that followed the Messina earthquake of December 28, 1908. Considered Europe’s most powerful earthquake, it killed an estimated 200,000 victims, including 13 of St. Hannibal’s nuns. At that time, our Founder’s orphanage for boys and girls was located in Messina. The earthquake forced St. Hannibal to move his work to Oria. This impetus, according to our Superior General, became for the Rogationist the congregation’s own earthquake, in which shockwaves of love transported the work of St. Hannibal from Messina to the rest of the world.

Fast forward 100 years later, the Rogationist family is coming together for the 1st Rogationist Mission Summit 2009, to be held from January 8 to 14 at the Oasis of Prayer in Silang, Cavite. Around 30 RCJs from around the world are coming together for this summit. The event aims to celebrate and share the richness and challenges of the Rogationist Mission; to share experiences, strategies, projects and programs to better promote Rogationist missionaries; establish connections, accompany and animate the Rogationist mission, strengthen and follow the Rogationist works and exchange information; and, to know the present situations and expectations of the Rogationist Mission today.

The program of activities for the seven days include the Mission Forum 2009 “Project: Parang,” encounter of missionaries with formands, mission exhibits, visit to various RCJ works in the Philippines, and sharing of missionary experiences. There will also be some sightseeing as well as quiet time for the participants.
